Dr Kumar developed genetically engineered crops for insect pest resistance. These include Shoot and Fruit Borer Resistant Brinjal (Eggplant), Fruit Borer resistant Tomato, Pod borer resistant Pigeonpea (Red gram) and Pod Borer resistant Chickpea (Bengal Gram) (in collaboration). Codon-modified genes encoding insecticidal proteins of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) were constructed and introduced in these crop species. Commercially viable events of Bt-Brinjal (Event 142) and Bt-Tomato (Event 25) were licensed to private companies for testing and commercialization. Event selection in Bt-Pigeonpea is in progress. Bt gene encoding Cry2Aa protein was provided to scientists of Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat and the gene was introduced in Chickpea. The Bt-Chickpea event was licensed to a private company.
